Scion Test Day Behind the Scenes

I was invited to Scion Racing's test day to see the three Scion's shakedown before the Formula DRIFT season opener. My good friend DC Chavez had asked me to assist him capture the day's activities for Scion. I didn't hesitate to lend a hand and get a chance to work with both a RED Epic camera and the new Canon 5D MK III along with being one of the first to see the new Scion FR-S in action with driver Ken Gushi behind the wheel.

These days are often long starting the evening before to prep and pack the proper equipment. Luckily, DC tested and put together the RED camera the day before and found that one of the pieces for the rental was the wrong one so arrangements were made to have this part delivered directly at the track before the client knew anything was wrong. After packing the SUV and heading to the track we then immediately unpacked and began set-up of the cameras, jibs and finalized our workflow for the day.

Sometimes having a small crew has its advantages with two videographers and I acting as a behind the scenes photographer we were able to work together quickly to cover much ground without taking up much space. Unfortunately with motorsports there are a lot of unknown variables that come into play. We only had about 2 or 3 runs to get the FR-S in action as it had some mechanical problems causing for an early exit. We did have the Scion TC driven by Fredric Aasbo and the TC driven by Tony Angelo to fill the rest of our day with action and interviews with all of the drivers. Even reality star Brody Jenner came out for a few rides.

The footage was used for promotional material for Scion Racing and can be seen below.
